Accessing Google Search Results for Specific Countries

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Let’s pretend that you have a website or a client that operates in specific city or country like the United States for example.  If you don’t live in the United States yourself how can you view the search results for Google.com?  We are a Canadian based company so we have to deal with this on a regular basis.  Today I want to show you a fast method that can show you geographically specific Google search results from pretty much any country in the world.

For example, if you go to Google (any geographic location, this is Google.ca for your reference) and type in ‘mountain bikes’ the results might look something like this:

mountain

But what if you want to view the results for just the United States for example?

Here’s how:

If you look at the search results URL it should look something like this:

http://www.google.ca/#hl=en&source=hp&q=mountain+bikes
+&rlz=1R2GGLL_enCA390&aq=f&aqi=g10&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=&fp=
23ee704744a78d5b

If you want to view the search results specific to the United States, simply add this code at the end of the search results URL and hit enter:

&gl=us

So just to review:

Without Code:

http://www.google.ca/#hl=en&source=hp&q=mountain+bikes
+&rlz=1R2GGLL_enCA390&aq=f&aqi=g10&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=&fp
=23ee704744a78d5b

With Code:

http://www.google.ca/#hl=en&source=hp&q=mountain+bikes
+&rlz=1R2GGLL_enCA390&aq=f&aqi=g10&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=&fp
=23ee704744a78d5b&gl=us

This is really helpful for viewing not only organic search results but the actual Adwords competition for specific keywords in the United States (Google Adwords competition measurement is usually way off). The results should now look something like this:

mountain22

Notice how the Adwords ad’s have changed as well as the organic listings.

Another thing to note here is if you want to find other countries like the UK or Australia, you can change the country code afterwards, for example:

&gl=uk

&gl=au

Hopefully this was helpful, as always we invite you to join in the conversation.  Feel free to comment or ask questions below.

Detecting No Follow Tags

Monday, November 23rd, 2009

In Advanced Mode, SEO-Browser will show links that have “no follow” tags. Let’s look at an example.

Recently, Chris Boggs wrote an article called “SEO Tools — Worth the Time and Money?” on SearchEngineWatch that included a link to www.seo-browser.com.

While I was reading the article I wondered if this page on SEW was an actual link or if they had used a “no follow” tag to prevent passing on any link love. The former being ideal.

Using SEO-Browser it is easy to see that the link is real and that all the love is being passed on to our humble tool.  [Thanks Chris!]

Here is how you check.
1. Copy the URL of the page you want to look at. In this case, http://searchenginewatch.com/3635712.
2. Go to SEO-Browser and paste the URL into the Address field, then click Parse.
3. Click on Advanced Mode.
4.  In the details section you will see a section called “# of Links” and beside that the number of links with a “no follow” tag. By the way, 29 links that are not followed is quite a few and concerned me at first.
5. Click on the number “29″ and a small embedded window will pop-up showing all the links. Here you will see that the link to SEO-Browser.com is not on the list. Excellent.
6. If you click on the number beside External you will see that there is a link to SEO-Browser on that list. This is good.
7. But there is another way to tell if a link has a “no follow” tag. If you scroll down the page in SEO-Browser, you will see some links are red. All red links have “no follow” tags; all blue links are actual links.

Help for Link Stats

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

“Link Stats” is one of the menu items in Advanced mode. As many of you are aware the quality and number of inbound links to a website are an important part of the algorithms for current search engines. The function behind this link creates a new page with link stats about the website’s home page.

“Backlinks on Google” uses a unique syntax to determine the number of inbound links showing up in Google. We are not using the official link: operator because Google only returns a sample of known links not the entire inventory. The syntax we use is “website minus site:website”. This searches for all references to the website and subtracts out all listings of the site itself. Manual variations will give you different results. Try putting quotes around the URL or dropping the www’s.

“Pages Indexed by Google” uses Google’s site: operator. This is a very useful function to see how big a site is - how many pages Google has indexed. In addition you can quickly review the format of listings in the SERPs to see if the title, description or page snippet, and URL have been optimized with keywords.

“Backlinks on Yahoo” creates a new page on Yahoo’s Site Explorer. Normally, you would need a Yahoo login account to access this useful too but with SEO-Browser you don’t need to login. Yahoo calls backlinks, Inlinks. Typically, we manually adjust the menu item Show Inlinks to list all Inlinks Except from this domain. This will give you all the links to the page you are reviewing.

“Pages Indexed by Yahoo uses the same tool but returns Pages instead. This function is similar to the Google site: command. The value is in comparing results between Google and Yahoo.
